Photographers are constantly gushing about how much they love their “job”. I mean, it’s understandable. We get to witness and document the best days of our clients’ lives. Weddings, celebrations, the birth of children, and in military communities, homecomings. It should go without saying that I love being a military homecoming photographer. Military homecomings are experiences I treasure immensely. I approach them like I would when photographing a wedding– I document the detailed elements that are integral to telling a complete story, but my main objective is to capture every emotion my clients feel. The anticipation and nervousness, the joy, the elation, the relief. The love. The simple, pure, unrelenting love shared between two people who have spent lonely nights staring into the same sky, dreaming of holding each other. Homecomings are made of all the stuff poets write about. And with any luck I am able to translate those poetic emotions into dynamic images that tell a story unique to the people in front of my camera.
This story is one about a girl and a boy from Texas who found themselves in North Carolina thanks to the Marine Corps. I was privileged to be there when they reunited at the culmination of their first deployment as husband and wife. As a Cherry Point Homecoming Photographer, I am honored to have written this chapter of their love story.
